INTRODUCTION

The marriage notices presented here were abstracted from The Carolina Spartan, which is one of the few sources for marriage records of Spartanburg County for the period prior to the beginning of statewide registration on July 1, 1911. Other sources for marriage records include family Bible records, which usually include information on mostly one family unit and even this is sometimes lacking; and local church records, which cover a larger community area. Church records often fail to record marriages but usually do note when a female member's name is changed by marriage. Of these sources, newspapers provide a wider range of information on the county as a whole. In many instances, one can find individuals from throughout South Carolina as well as other states listed in these notices. While these notices are not perfect the editor himself corrected a marriage in which he had incorrectly listed the bride's surname, and other errors, typographical and otherwise have probably occurred), they represent a significant source for family history. This work starts with the first extant issue for 1866. The 1865 issues are not extant. They are believed to have been lost when the office of the Spartanburg Herald-Journal burned in 1917. Marriages prior to 1865 have not been presented here as they have been published elsewhere.

It is hoped this work will prove helpful to those who are researching in the Spartanburg area of the Piedmont region. If only one "lost" ancestor is found, it will have been worth the time and effort I have spent.
