CHESTER DISTRICT, SC EQUITY INDEX
This index lists only the names of the major parties. Equity Court files
frequently, but not always, contain specific family information. Equity bills
for partitions and petitions for appointment of guardians, in particular, are of
great genealogical value. Any of the equity files listed below can be ordered
from the Reference and Research Division, South Carolina Department of
Archives and History, P.O. Box 11669, South Carolina 29211-1669. As a
first step, one would be well advised first to inquire as to the number of
pages in the file of interest.

Editor's Note: As stated at the beginning of the Greenville District Equity index, I cannot
emphasize enough that this is only a listing of the major parties of these cases. An equity bill is
a wealth of genealogical and historical information. Should you see an ancestor's name listed
here, I encourage you to examine the equity bill in question closely.

1812 PENSION ABSTRACT FOR ELISHA
&
MARY REEVES

Source:
South Carolina Pension Abstracts of the Revolutionary War; War of

and Indian Wars, Vol
#12.
War of 1812 - South Carolina Service of Elisha Reeves and Mary Reeves #WO 7970
The files notes that the soldier served as a Captain in Charles Gant's company of South Carolina militia.
A Declaration was made in Washington County, Indiana on January 8, 1872 by Mary A. Reeves, age 78, in
which she states she is the widow of Elisha Reeves who enlisted in the War of 1812 as a substitute for Thomas
Dockers under Capt. Charles Grant of South Carolina in Union County in 1813 or 1814 and was honorably
discharged atJohn's Island, South Carolina. The widow further stated she was married under the name of Mary
Meridith to said Elisha Reeves on September 8, 1812 by Chyn McDougal in South Carolina and that her
husband died in Lawrence County, Indiana on August 15, 1840.
An affidavit of William Martin in Washington Co., Indiana on Jan. 13, 1872, states he is age 49 and
well acquainted with Mary Reeves and her husband in his lifetime, Elisha Reeves, a soldier of the War of 1812,
and knows they lived together as husband and wife. He further stated that in the family bible there is a record
of the marriage in which appears the following: Elisha Reeves and Mary Meridith married September 8, 1812.
He also stated that he was present at the death of Elisha Reeves and that he died on August 15, 1840.

FAMILY GROUPS AND FAMILY CONNECTIONS FROM COUNTY COURT RECORDS
Contributed by Dr. James L. Reid, 730 Walnut Hill Road, Campobello SC 29322.
Contibutor's note: The intent and purpose of this contribution is to expose family groups and family
connections from the various types of court records from the upstate counties of South Carolina.
The county and the type of record will be carefully identified. The wording, sentence structure (or
lack thereof), and punctuation (or lack thereof) of original documents will be followed as closely as
possible. Information within a document that is not essential nor relevant to the genealogical content
will be elided, as indicated by successive dots, i.e., .... Statements or individual words not in the
original document will be enclosed by square brackets []. Names, places, and dates are sometimes
set in boldface type by the contributor for purposes of highlighting and emphasis.

Transcribed by Dr. James L. Reid, 730 Walnut Hill Rd, Campobello, SC 29322
Transcriber’s Note: This contribution from the Chester District Equity Court indices began with Vol.
X, No. 1, January 1996, always taken from the Plaintiff Index —until Vol. XX, No. 1, February 2006. In
that issue, your transcriber inadvertently started the “M’s” from the Defendants Index, with the name of
the defendant under the heading of Plaintiff and the plaintiff under the heading of Defendant. Here, we
start again with the beginning of the “M’s” from the Plaintiff Index. The names are now under the
correct headings, and the Plaintiff Index properly resumes from Vol. XIX, No. 1, February 2005.

Note: Equity Court bills and petitions usually contain family information, and they are therefore
valuable genealogical sources. These files can be ordered from the Reference & Research Division,
South Carolina Department of Archives & History, P. O. Box 11669, Columbia, SC 29211-1669. As a
first step, one would be well advised first to inquire as to the number of pages in the file of interest.
